Intensive two-day seminar, taught by EAI Chairman/COO Jim Norris, provides participants with a solid foundation in leadership essentials, as well as a proven series of tactics to help managers become leaders that are more effective. What You Will Learn


Day One: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM

Introduction

    This section examines the need for effective leadership in organizations, including the massive and ongoing changes taking place in our companies, in our customers, in our employees and co-workers, and in us. What do we do in business? How do we do business? Why are we in business?

Definitions

    What is leadership? How is leadership practiced in the work place? This section lays the groundwork for effective leadership action, including the basic cornerstones of Competence, Commitment, Courage, Character, and Connection. Common myths about leadership are busted! Self-assessment tools.

Leadership Values

    This section develops some of the basic cornerstones of leadership with an emphasis on personal and company values -- how they are developed and how they are communicated. What are our core values? How do core values establish solid ground for the company? How does respect impact leadership?

Planning and Winning

    This section outlines five tactical skills that effective leaders practice. Learn how to navigate from the initial phase of strategic planning to practical implementation, with the aid of an action plan. In addition, learn how to establish priorities and when to change them; how to create momentum for change; and how to align everyone on the team on the path to victory.

Servant Leadership

    This section examines the typical corporate structure and delivery system and compares it to the Servant Leadership structure and delivery system. Recognize the need for changing the current corporate culture and corporate attitudes. Learn how to create a culture that is effective and customer-focused.

Heroic vs. Post-Heroic Leadership

    This section compares traditional and more progressive leadership styles, including the positive and negative aspects of each. Analyze a matrix outlining what people want in the workplace and a matrix outlining what people want from their leaders. Determine where best effort needs to be placed in your organization. This section also examines a typical continuum of leadership and managerial behavior and outlines the role of intuition in the leadership/management process.


Day Two: 8:30 AM–4:30 PM

Leadership and You

    This section helps you understand why certain types of people are happy working with you and what you need to do to attract a broad spectrum of skills and attitudes to your company work force. You will look at your own leadership/communication style and understand your strengths and weaknesses.

Setting Goals

    This section will cover the basic ground rules of goal setting for yourself and for your employees. Without clear goals, there is no objective; and without a specific objective, there can be no leadership!

Giving Credit When It Is Due

    Learn how to "catch people doing things right." Learn how to use praise with employees to reinforce their positive actions.

Effective Corrective Action

    This section deals with appropriate action to remedy inappropriate action. Learn how to reprimand employees effectively to encourage lasting behavior change. Differentiate between evaluation and positive feedback in corrective situations.

Passing the Banner

    This section provides a coaching self-assessment and an eight-point model for coaching employees. This section includes a matrix for identifying the winners and achievers in your organization and providing them with tools and opportunities for growth. Learn how to select, train, and prepare your successor for leadership within the company.

Pre-Work and Communication Packet

    Registrants will receive a comprehensive communication packet prior to the Retreat. The packet will include a copy of "The One Minute Manager" and a series of self-assessment tools to be completed prior to the Retreat. There will also be a simple goal-setting exercise to complete in advance.
